A Messenger of Sentiments- Bal Krishna Joshi from Nepal

Originally co-written as part of “Entrepreneurs for Nepal” group along with Samriddhi, the prosperity foundation

Bal Krishna Joshi argues that he might most probably be the most famous “goat-seller” of the world. Bal is best known for co-founding thamel.com, an internet e-commerce business that enables expatriate Nepalis to purchase gifts and arrange for their delivery within Nepal, including famously, selling goats over the internet, during Dashain festivals.

What made him an entrepreneur? His dislike for a career oriented job and his reluctance to work for a corporate entity. His search for new opportunities got his attention towards the IT industry. With a friend of his, Bal thought of building an information portal. His friend registered thamel.com. Their initial step was to cater to the needs of the site visitors by creating a chat platform. The platform was also intended for the vendors to use to connect to their prospective customers and sell their products. But to their surprise, they found that most of the users which consisted of Nepali students studying abroad, used the platform to connect to their relatives and friends here in Nepal. Top ten challenges with human resources in Nepal

So here is a  list of challenges faced while managing associates while running Digital Max Solutions, a Website development company and an online branding firm.

1) People take the job as a training first – execution of their responsibilities second(they are less inclined to feel responsible for their jobs). So tell them bluntly about this distinction when you hire them.

2) Competent manpower are hard to retain for more than a year. Expect short term. Build for mid term, hope for long term. Try calling employees —> associates. Show them you mean that. It may make all the difference.

3) Some people work hard to impress you during the early months of their career with you, and then once they win your trust, start slacking off noticeably (intentionally /unintentionally). So build regular incentive packages and compare their contribution with new people regularly (through statistics, earnings etc)

4) In Kathmandu, you would have to invest most of your resources on infrastructure management, insurance and backup/security of the infrastructure, leaving not much resources for human resources trainings and career development. The only option here is build environment where they can learn

positive news media

Is there a niche market for “positive” media in Nepal?

In Nepal, every news (newspaper, online, TV, radio and other media) veers towards negative. Scan the newspapers, turn on your television. You will get plenty of proof. Why? Believe me when I say, it is not because there are not positive stories, personalities or work being done now. There are plenty! but media sanitzes us by feeding us sensationalized news, negative and gossip.

Amidst all this doom and gloom (or so it seems), here is my analysis.  There is a great opportunity for an all positive news” media.  An empowering media which lists current events that are positive and have potential to inspire us .

We could do with more positive stories of:

  1. rags to riches stories of Nepali
  2. social entrepreneurs success and failures
  3. street entrepreneurs of urban centers
  4. risk-takers in different professions
  5. community activists stories
  6. Community successes
  7. discussion transcripts between youths on sociopolitical issues
  8. mentor-ship events
  9. Networking events and fund-raisers.
  10. stories of Nepali uniting with each other on community to international level
  11. adventure stories in Nepal
  12. Nepali traveling in Nepal.

A formula for business success:

So in summary:

Best Working Environment >>> >Best Workers >>> Best Product (or Service) >>>> Best chance for sustained Profit !!!

this pretty much sums it all for what i want to say for business success.

btw.. if you think i missed ” the Best idea“, No i didn’t. Its good if you have an excellent idea, but doesn’t have to be a pre-requisite. Execution is the real deal.
