Another plane crashed in Nepal this week

Post by Prasanna Dhungel

We are all very sad that another aircraft crashed in Nepal this week. 19 innocent passengers died on their way back from the Everest flight. I can only imagine how excited they must have been to see Mt Everest.

Three years ago, I was with my family on this same Buddha Air mountain flight. It was an unbeatable sight to fly through the majestic Himalayas. We were ecstatic when we returned to Kathmandu after seeing the breathtaking views. That day, our flight could have hit the side of the mountain in Kathmandu and I could have died, just as the passengers in the fatal Buddha Air flight that hit the mountain on Sunday.

Honestly, it can be any of us who flies in the domestic airlines in Nepal. There have been so many crashes over the last few years in Nepal. We become very sad when we see pictures and videos of the burned bodies and mourning family members. On one fatal flight a few years ago, the pilot was a year senior to me in St Xavier’s and I vividly remember his face to this day. The government sets up an investigation committee. The airlines and the government pledge to make the skies safer.  The investigation generally yields the same – ‘pilot error’. The dead pilots are blamed for going too low into the clouds, not taking the right route etc etc and we sheepishly believe them. It is so convenient to blame the dead, isn’t it?  I am fairly confident that this time again, the commission will blame the dead pilots, very little will be done and another plane will crash. The only difference will be that one of us could be on the next fatal flight – unless we question and act now!

My simple question – can the pilot always be at fault? Thousands of beechcrafts fly the skies throughout the world. If the pilot was always at fault, you would hear of many more beechcraft crashes. Yet these aircrafts don’t crash as much elsewhere as in Nepal. Why?

Let us logically think about this.  A plane can crash for one or more of the following 4 reasons -
1) Pilot error   2) Faulty aircraft engine 3)  Control tower error     4) Lack of navigational equipment on-board

Pilot error is one cause. It cannot be the only and primary cause always, as the reports tell us in Nepal. We all know that faulty aircraft engine, control tower error and lack of navigation equipment on-board are the bigger and more important reasons why aircrafts crash in Nepal.

To prevent this, we must all ask two simple questions–

  1. Why don’t Nepali domestic airlines spend extra to repair their engines and get new equipment? Yes these will cost money, but you pass this cost to the passengers. I will pay Rs 500 extra per flight for my life, than get on a Rs 500 cheaper flight and lose my life!
  1. Why don’t we have modern navigation equipment in TIA and the aircrafts? I have been on a beechcraft and it has landed on snowstorms. Why can’t we have modern navigational equipment in Nepal? TIA must install the best equipment and navigate every aircraft through the harsh Kathmandu’s terrain (a valley surrounded by high mountains). Yes that will cost extra. Collect more taxes from the passengers who are flying and buy the equipment.  It is not rocket science! Take some initiative, will you! Rs 500 or whatever amount extra per flight is worth the extra charge to have a safe flight in Nepal than getting cheap poor quality air-crafts that repeatedly crash and kill us innocents.

We cannot remain silent and accept blame put on the dead pilot. We have to pressure Buddha Air management and the air traffic controller to uncover real reasons. We have to get to the root of the problem and solve it. It is in Buddha Air’s interest, the aviation industry’s interest, Nepali tourism industry’s interest, everyone’s interest.  Show us the past reports, put them online for the world to see. If you have done your jobs well, why worry? We will even thank you.

If we pressure airlines today to timely maintain their planes, invest in weather navigation equipment and send their pilots to training schools so that everything is at the top of the game, we can fly Nepali skies safely! If we remain silent and accept blame on the dead pilot again, then any of us (I, you, your family, your friends) can be on the next fatal flight. We will be the unlucky dead ones on the news splashed in television and dailies.

Shall we Nepalis unite for a safer skies? or will we just say yet again, “yestai ho, ke garne?”. Make your choice.

If your family members, friends, neighbors and relatives work in the airlines industry or TIA, ask this question. Put pressure. Criticize them if they are not doing their job and taking the short cut. If you don’t question, you may be sorry the next time. Ask for accountability here, It’s your responsibility to do so.

How to help your country?

Quote

Zizhang searched for Confucius throughout China. The country was going through a time of great social upheaval, and he feared there could be bloodshed. He found the master sitting beneath a fig tree, meditating. ‘Master, we urgently need your presence in the government,’ said Zizhang. ‘We are on the brink of chaos.’

Confucius continued to meditate. ‘Master, you taught us that we must not stand idly by,’ Zizhang went on. ‘You said that we were responsible for the world.’ ‘I am praying for the country,’ replied Confucius. ‘Later, I will go and help the man who lives round the corner. By doing what is within our reach, we benefit everyone.’

By merely coming up with ideas about how to save the world, we do not even help ourselves. ‘There are a thousand ways of getting involved in politics; there is no need for me to be part of the government.’

beautiful song on being Nepali

Help us, by not helping us now

Free lunch ?

Dear friends from neighboring nations, aid workers, donors, dignitaries, fellow social servers who care about Nepal, Here’s a humble request from yet another Nepali.

“Do help us, by not helping us now!”

No, this is not trying to make a mockery out of you or to slight you, It is but a serious proposition! A cry for help.

Your help day by day is getting us addicted. It is NOT your fault. It is ours. We have become greed-ier because of your generosity. We want more now, by doing less and less now.

We are lazy-er because of your wealth, we know it is easier to ask from you, than to earn in a dignified way on our own (go entrepreneurial). It is getting harder to convince youths to go for “hard-earned money” when competing with “easy money”. why do we have more and more educated youths opting for the 40,000 NGO’s (non profits) littered around the country? Why do you think almost all our Constituent Assembly members are traveling abroad and doing anything but helping build the constitution? You know most help for their trip or their salary comes from your “aid”?  (let us be)

We are learning the easy way to hustle wealth. We all know, “Easy money” is  synonymous with “Aid money” here in Nepal. Even a cow-herder in remote Bajura, knows this. Last time I was there, he was waiting on an empty hospital complex, waiting for your money to help resurrect our empty hospitals like his. He will wait until you feel obligated to act on his “helplessness”. He will never count on his community and himself to start finding a solution ourselves. (let us be)

We are learning that it is safer, easier and materially rewarding to wait for disasters after disasters in Nepal, because we recognize poverty, disasters, self-inflicted problems are the key to easy money pouring into Nepal. So this time around, will you help us by taking us away from this appetite for the “status-quo” or “disaster-love”. (let us be)

I can see, how when you initially refuse to help us, we will suffer. Consider this a “withdrawal syndrome” (to our aid addiction). At first we get a terrible hangover, we will cry like maniacs, plead, shout, threaten and we may even hurt each other! Fine.
Then we will slowly figure that there is no one (no mummy) who will come to our doors to help us, no aid coming to give us our ‘fix’. Only then we might just start sorting our matters ourselves.  (let us be)

This mess is ours to solve even though we might dig ourself digger into the hole in the short run. The only way out of this addiction is a complete withdrawal from this greed drug we inhale day in and out, in Kathmandu specially.  (let us be)

Leave us alone now, even when we might threaten to harm ourselves and our dear ones. Out of our own pain, comes our salvation. This addiction has to stop.  (let us be)

And, when we have finally come out of this re-hab (we will), only then, please come with open arms and your generousness. Ask us then, a helpful question, “Hi there! how can we now work together for mutual benefit?” This way, give us a bit of self-dignity while we make a head-start again. Don’t “aid” us. “Work” with us.

So till then, for better or worse, let us Nepalis figure it all out for each-other. We owe it to you and the rest of the world to get back in track.

Come, help us by not helping us!  (Help us rid us of our addiction). You will be doing us a great “service”.

Thank you.

When you say, Its not my concern.

  • “When a poor Nepali lost his dignity waiting in long lines for a passport, you said, “It has nothing to do with me, I already have a job here.”
  • When a young woman lost her freedom, you said, “It has nothing to do with me, I am not a woman.”
  • When a journalist is thrashed, you said, “It has nothing to do with me, I don’t write.”
  • When a policeman’s family got death threats, you said, “It has nothing to do with me, I don’t work for the government.”
  • When a man from madhes lost his identity as a Nepali, you said, “It has nothing to do with me, because I am not a madhesi.”
  • When a businessperson who employs hundreds of Nepalis is exhorted, you said, “It has nothing to do with me, because I don’t have a business.”

When they are after everyone—even the poor, media, police, women, ethnic tribes, entrepreneurs—there will be no one left to speak for you anymore.

Incompetent rulers, unaccountable leadership and irresponsible citizens.
We are stealing our future from us.
