The real problem in Nepal: A vicious cycle where people extort each-other

Each of us is stuck in a vicious cycle “Chakrabyu” in Nepal. No, I’m not talking about politics or government. I’m talking about us, ordinary citizens.

For a minute, Let us imagine this scenario.

Lets say I (you) am a branding expert. I have to rush for a business meeting with a client which is a private school who wants us to advertise them better. The meeting is at Durbar Marg in central Kathmandu. I decide to take a taxi as the traffic is bad and it’s getting late. The taxi driver happens to be a middle-aged smiling fellow. He doesn’t seem to be a bad person. But he has decided to tamper with his meter and dupe me.

Why?

Lets look at his point of view. Kathmandu is getting outrageously expensive for him to sustain his young family. He has to make enough profit to give back to his taxi owner and then some more to feed his family that night. So he feels he has no choice but to con me. So he makes a sad choice. He tampers with his meter and

Nepal’s Democracy needs a new Aristocracy

A thought.
Maybe Nepal’s Democracy needs a new Aristocracy.  i.e A cohesive network of wise men and women of knowledge, vision, reach and communicative skills to steer it from fragmentation and loss of national identity.  Why? in order to protect Nepal from becoming a lawless mob rule, a populist propaganda driven rule, a caste based rule, a tribe based rule and an anarchy rule.
I believe in countries like the United Kingdom the democracy there was evolved by the active support of its aristocracy slowly building democratic ideals and liberty. Maybe Singapore’s first prime minister (and the one credited for making it from the 3rd world to 1st world country)  Lee_Kuan_Yew got it right by assembling a team dedicated to “gaas, baas, kapaas” (गाँस, बास, कपास).
The way I see Nepal being driven now, maybe an aristocracy of a progressive few can protect it ? A patriotic and meritocratic elite group that could come together to build this aristocracy ?

You can’t improve what is inherently evil.

Taking cue from archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa, who said on the lines of “You cannot improve what is inherently evil.”

Let us add:

  • You can’t improve politicians who lose elections yet win power.
  • You can’t improve a political system that thrives on status quo and fear over you.
  • You can’t improve groups that fight on the lines of their caste and color of their skins or through their entitlements.
  • You can’t improve violent cultures. You can only replace them.
  • You can’t improve fear-driven, resigned minds. You can only replace them with youthfulness.
  • You can’t improve others without first improving yourself.
